Certain breeds seem to be at increased risk for developing Addison's disease. These include, but are not limited to: Portuguese Water Dogs, Bearded Collies, Standard Poodles, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, Leonbergers, Great Danes, and Labrador Retrievers.

Hypoadrenocorticism is most often caused by immune-mediated destruction of the adrenal glands resulting in decreased mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid production. Although less common, some dogs with hypoadrenocorticism have normal serum electrolytes.

Clinical signs Lethargy. Loss of appetite. Vomiting. Diarrhea. Weight loss. Increased thirst and urination. Trembling. Weakness.

Addison's disease is relatively uncommon in dogs and considered rare in cats. When seen, it is most prevalent in young to middle-aged female dogs. The condition has, however, been diagnosed in dogs and cats of all ages, either gender and in both intact and neutered animals.

Clinical signs result from hypocortisolism and include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, weakness, lethargy/dullness, and stress intolerance. Causes of secondary hypoadrenocorticism include destruction of the pituitary gland by neoplasia, inflammation, or head trauma (1,5).

Addison's disease is caused by a lack of cortisol and aldosterone hormones. This deficiency contributes to general signs of illness, and the condition may become life-threatening if the hormone levels drop too low.

There are, however, some breeds that appear to be predisposed to the disease: Standard Poodles. West Highland White Terriers. Great Danes. Bearded Collies. Portuguese Water Dogs. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers. Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
