Ectodermal dysplasias is a group of conditions in which there is abnormal development of the skin, hair, nails, teeth, or sweat glands.

The condition is present from birth but may not be detected until later in childhood. ED is caused by altered genes. It can be inherited within families who have the genetic defect, or it can occur in families without a history of the condition. ED cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be treated or managed.

Summary. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a genetic skin disease. Common symptoms include sparse scalp and body hair, reduced ability to sweat, and missing teeth. HED is caused by genetic changes in the EDA, EDAR, or EDARADD genes.

HED patients have a characteristic facies with frontal bossing, a saddle nose, and full, everted lips as seen in this case also. Abnormal mucous glands result in extremely thick nasal secretions and a propensity to develop respiratory tract infections.

Symptoms Abnormal nails. Abnormal or missing teeth, or fewer than normal number of teeth. Cleft lip. Decreased skin color (pigment) Large forehead. Low nasal bridge. Thin, sparse hair. Learning disabilities.

Signs & Symptoms Hair: abnormal structure, sparse, slow-growing, often light-colored. Sweat glands: often reduced number and abnormal structure, leading to decreased sweat production and risk of elevated body temperature (hyperthermia) Nails: toenails and fingernails can be absent, thin, thick, grooved.

Ectodermal dysplasias are caused by a change, or mutation, in a gene. ED can be passed on from parents or can occur when there is no family history of the condition. Parents should know they did not do anything to cause the gene mutation that is present in a child with ED.

Affected individuals tend to have sparse scalp and body hair (hypotrichosis ). The hair is often light-colored, brittle, and slow-growing. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is also characterized by several missing teeth (hypodontia) or teeth that are malformed.
