The main principle behind stratigraphy is that of superposition. This says that older things are found below younger things. When archaeologists excavate sites, we find layers of soil, each marking a period of use of the site. Artifacts in the upper layers were laid down after those in lower levels.

Stratigraphic data may be translated into abstract diagrams, with each deposit's diagram positioned relative to the deposits above and below it. By this method, archaeologists can illustrate the strati-graphic sequence of a given site with a single diagram.

Layers of soil build up over time, each with its own color and texture. Studying the different layers of soil is called stratigraphy. An archaeologist will slowly dig down through these layers of soil to look for artifacts. As a rule, the deeper they dig, the farther back in time they go.

Superposition: A concept used in archeology and geology to date soil layers ing to their relative position to each other. In general, the oldest soil layers are on the bottom and the most recent at the top.

One of the most fundamental principles of archaeology is the Law of Superposition. The law states that strata that are younger will be deposited on top of strata that are older, given normal conditions of deposition. This law is the guiding principle of stratigraphy, or the study of geological or soil layers.

The law of superposition is one of the principles of geology scientists use to determine the relative ages of rock strata, or layers. This principle states that layers of rock are superimposed, or laid down one on top of another. The oldest rock strata will be on the bottom and the youngest at the top.

The principle of superposition states that in an undeformed sequence of sedimentary rocks, each layer of rock is older than the one above it and younger than the one below it (Figures 1 and 2). ingly, the oldest rocks in a sequence are at the bottom and the youngest rocks are at the top.

Archaeological considerations An example would be that the silt back-fill of an underground drain would form some time after the ground immediately above it. Other examples of non vertical superposition would be modifications to standing structures such as the creation of new doors and windows in a wall.
