And, the sensory pathways from the skin, which give information on pain, temperature, and touch are mapped onto the somatosensory cortex (Figure 4). This mapping of our sense of touch onto the cortex gives us a representation of the body which was named the Homunculus by its discoverer, Wilder Penfield.

The homunculus in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is famous for its body part selectivity, but this dominant feature may eclipse other representational features, e.g., information content, also relevant for S1 organization.

The motor homunculus is a topographic representation of the body parts and its correspondents along the precentral gyrus of the frontal lobe. While the sensory homunculus is a topographic representation of the body parts along the postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe.

The reason is the brain maps each sensory receptor onto the cortex rather than considering the area of the body where the sensor is located.

The primary somatosensory cortex is called S1. This area of the cerebral cortex receives sensory information from the somatic senses, plus proprioceptive senses and some visceral senses. It is located on the postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe, as shown in Figure 4.3.

The Female Homunculus. The scarcity of somatosensory research on women may have led to the omission of female representation. As recently as 1997, mapping of the somatosensory cortex using magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain imaging was conducted solely on male participants [35].

The somatotopic map is the projection of the body surface onto a brain area that is responsible for our sense of touch and that is called the somatosensory cortex. This projection connects neurons of the cortex with touch receptors in the skin surface such that neighborhood relations are preserved.

Sensory maps are created primarily within the somatosensory cortex, also referred to as the sensory cortex. The central nervous system is attached to this cortex and all other parts of an organism's body.
