How to fill out the Ah Counter Template online

The Ah Counter Template is an essential tool for members of the Docklands Toastmasters Club to record and assess the use of filler words during speeches. This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions to help users fill out the form effectively and accurately.

Follow the steps to complete the Ah Counter Template seamlessly.

  1. Click the ‘Get Form’ button to access the Ah Counter Template and open it in your preferred online editor.
  2. In the 'Name' fields, input the names of the members who will be speaking during the meeting. Ensure accuracy to facilitate easy tracking of their 'ums', 'ahs', and other extraneous sounds.
  3. As the meeting progresses, monitor each speaker closely. In the linked 'Ums', 'Errs', and 'Ahs' fields, tally the occurrences of each term as they speak. Be attentive to other gap fillers such as 'you knows' or inappropriate interjections like 'and', 'well', 'but', and 'so'.
  4. If a speaker repeats a word or phrase, such as 'I, I' or 'This means, this means', make note of this in the designated area of the form.
  5. Once the meeting concludes, review your counts and ensure all fields are filled out correctly. Prepare to report your findings.
  6. When called upon by the Toastmaster, share a brief explanation of your role as the Ah Counter, followed by the total counts of infringements for each member in a timely manner, within 2 minutes.
  7. After completing your report, save any changes made to the template. You can then download, print, or share the filled-out form as required.

The most common filler words in speech are like "um", "ah," "like", and "you know." The most common filler phrases in writing are "Needless to say," "in my humble opinion," "for what it's worth," "basically," and "simply."

Ah Counter: Helping members off their crutches The purpose of the Ah-Counter is to note any word or sound used as a crutch by anyone who speaks during the meeting. Words may be inappropriate interjections, such as and, well, but, so and you know. Sounds may be ah, um or er.

Filler words allow speakers time to pause and consider what to say next. Used as an alternative to silence, filler words let the listener know that you have more to say, even if you need a moment before you continue.

The Ah-Counter Role “The purpose of the Ah-Counter is to note any overused words or filler sounds used as a crutch by anyone who speaks during the meeting,” states the official Toastmasters description.

These include words such as “and,” “well,” “but,” “so” and “you know,” but also mere sounds like “ah,” “um” and “er.” Sometimes they include words such as “literally,” “actually” and “basically.” Whatever form they take, crutch words typically have two attributes: 1) overuse, and 2) meaninglessness.

In a presentation setting, however, filler words and phrases generally don't add anything. The odd one here and there is fine and if used properly can even add impact (we'll come on to this later) but overusing these meaningless words or sounds can make us appear unconfident, unprepared and nervous.

When introduced during the club meeting, explain the role of the Ah-Counter. In the Ah-Counter's log, record overlong pauses, overused words and filler sounds relied upon too often by all speakers. Examples include: and, but, so, you know, ah, um.

Filler and crutch words are words used by someone when they are thinking about what they are going to say, such as um, uh, like, and you know. At TranscribeMe, we always remove filler words such as uh, um, mm-hmm, etc. (unless it is the only response to a direct question).
