To view an electron in its orbit, you must shine a wavelength of light on it that is smaller than the electron's wavelength. This small wavelength of light has a high energy. The electron will absorb that energy. The absorbed energy will change the electron's position.

Light is emitted when an electron jumps from a higher orbit to a lower orbit and absorbed when it jumps from a lower to higher orbit. The energy and frequency of light emitted or absorbed is given by the difference between the two orbit energies, e.g.
