How do you get a lien removed from a car title? Once your car loan is completely paid off, obtain a car title lien release from your lender so your state BMV or DMV can put the car title in your name.

Individuals can also search for lien records online using the Maryland Land Records site. The service is free, but one must have an account to access it. In addition, interested parties can check for liens placed on vehicles in Maryland by contacting the Motor Vehicle Administration.

There are only nine title-holding states: Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Oklahoma, Wisconsin. In the other 41 states, titles are issued to the lien holder of your vehicle until the loan is fully paid off.

You may apply for a clear title in person at any of the MVA's full-service branch offices or by mail to the MVA's title file unit. You must submit the Maryland Notice of Security Interest Filing (SIF) and/or the lien release letter you received, plus the current title for your vehicle.

The most important document when selling a car is the certificate of title. If there is a lien on the title, the lienholder must release interest in the vehicle before the car is sold. This can be achieved either by the seller paying off the car or by the lienholder providing a letter of lien release.

To register a new car, you'll need your car title, a Maryland Safety Inspection report, and proof of insurance for the car. If you have a lien on the vehicle, you'll also need a completed Security Interest Filing Statement (VR-217).

Lenders may request the placement of a lien by applying in-person at any of the MVA's full service branch offices, in-person to the Vehicle Services Unit in the Glen Burnie office, or by mail to the Central Lien Unit. A lien may be placed on a new vehicle or a newly acquired used vehicle at the time of titling.
