Ambulatory EEG: outpatient recording, usually for 1–3 days but duration varies, with or without video; EEG-video monitoring: this is usually assumed to be inpatient and prolonged, but really does not have to be either; Long-term monitoring: this term is confusing because it only refers to duration.

Prolonged EEG: 1 to 2 hours may be done with or without video. Ambulatory EEG: recording the person's EEG in the outpatient setting or at home, usually for 1 to 3 days. The length of recording can vary and it may be done with or without video.

An ambulatory EEG test makes a recording of your brain's activity over a number of hours or days. EEG wires are placed on your scalp, like in a routine EEG, then attached to a special recorder that is slightly larger than a portable cassette player.

Prolonged EEG: A prolonged EEG test usually takes one hour and 15 minutes, but some types can last several days. A prolonged EEG gives your healthcare provider more information than a routine EEG. Your provider may use a prolonged EEG test to diagnose or manage seizures disorders. Prolonged EEGs use video.

An ambulatory EEG may be done if you continue to have seizures after trying various seizure medications. The testing can either confirm the diagnosis of epilepsy or find that epilepsy waves are not causing the seizures. Ambulatory EEG monitoring is generally done at a specialized epilepsy center.

Routine electroencephalogram (EEG) is a common test of neurophysiologic function that is performed to diagnose and monitor several conditions affecting the brain [1], [2].

A routine EEG is described by Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes 95812, 95813, 95816, 95819 or 95822 and refers to a routine EEG recording of less than a 24 hour continuous duration.

What is an Ambulatory EEG (aEEG)? Ambulatory electroencephalography (aEEG) monitoring is an EEG that is recorded at home. It has the ability to record for up to 72 hours. The aEEG increases the chance of recording an event or abnormal changes in the brain wave patterns.

The aEEG is used to record abnormal brain activity that could not be recorded with the regular 20 minute EEG recording. If abnormal activity only happens a few times a day or during certain times of the day, the aEEG will be able to capture and record those events that would have been missed with the regular EEG.
