The Blue Team is a Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) available year-round for all-risk assignments. We operate under the standards of the National Wildfire Coordinating Group with oversight by the Rocky Mountain Coordinating Group. National IMTs manage the response efforts of large scale national disasters.

A Type 1 IMT is a self-contained, all-hazard team recognized at the national and state level, coordinated through the state, GACC, or NIFC. All personnel meet the NWCG training regimen at the Type 1 level for their specific position.

This type of incident is the most complex, requiring national resources for safe and effective management and operation. All command and general staff positions are filled. Operations personnel often exceed 500 per operational period and total personnel will usually exceed 1,000.

A Type 2 IMT is deployed as a team of 20-35 to manage incidents of regional significance and other incidents requiring a large number of local, regional, state, and national resources.

There are two types of incident management teams (IMTs). As a general rule, type 1 national teams manage the most complex fires. Type 2 teams generally manage less complex wildland fires. Both type 1 and type 2 teams are managed on a rotational basis through the nine geographical areas.

Each NIMS Type 1 US&R task force is composed of 70 members specializing in search, rescue, medicine, hazardous materials, logistics and planning, including technical specialists such as physicians, structural engineers and canine search teams.

The Incident Commander Type 1 (ICT1) is responsible for all aspects of emergency response, including developing incident objectives, managing incident operations, setting priorities, defining the organization of the incident management team, and the overall Incident Action Plan (IAP).

Several Type 1 teams were assigned to assist FEMA after the September 11th attack, the shuttle recovery effort and Hurricane Katrina. National “Type 2” IMTs can be assigned to major fires, VIP visits, lengthy search and rescues, law enforcement incidents, multi-day special events.
