Domestic wells are typically associated with rural residences. These kinds of wells allow normal, indoor use in one to three residences. The permit should outline number of residences allowed to be served by the well.

In order to administer the thousands of wells in Colorado, the State Engineer issues and maintains permits that limit the use of each well pursuant to the Colorado Revised Statutes. By law, every new or replacement well in the state that diverts groundwater must have a well permit.

These wells typically are shallow and of large diameter (several feet), and may be lined with stones, brick, or tile. They typically extend only a short distance below the water table. Driven wells are constructed by driving small-diameter pipe into saturated unconsolidated sand and gravel.

Most homeowner wells in Colorado are exempt. Exempt wells are not administered under the “first in time, first in right” priority system used to allocate water in our state. Exempt wells are generally limited to 15 gpm and require non-evaporative wastewater systems such as septic tanks and leach fields.

Kevin Rein The State Engineer is also the Executive Director of the Colorado Ground Water Commission and is the Secretary of the Board of Examiners for Water Well and Pump Installation Contractors.

Household-use-only wells are typically on properties that are less than 35 acres in size. With this type of well, the water can only be used inside the home. No lawn watering, garden watering, or other outside use is permitted. Domestic use wells apply to more than 35 acres in size properties.

1. Does the home have a drilled well, and if so, when was it drilled? The average lifespan for a well is 30–50 years.

The USGS identifies seven principal aquifers or aquifer systems in Colorado: the South Platte Aquifer, Arkansas Aquifer, High Plains Aquifer, San Luis Valley Aquifer System, Denver Basin Aquifer System, Piceance Creek Basin Aquifer and the Leadville Limestone Aquifer of west-central Colorado (CGS, 2003).
