Like many Native Nations, the Navajo (Diné) signed treaties as well as fought against American efforts to create pathways from the East to California. Despite all their efforts, the Navajo (Diné) people were removed from their homelands by the United States government in the 1860s.

Especially in the late nineteenth century, Navajo children like many other indigenous children were sent to boarding schools. Settler colonialism resulted in a need to as Native Words Native Warriors puts it “eliminate traditional American Indian ways of life and replace them with mainstream American culture.”

The Navajo Wars were a long series of battles and skirmishes between American ranchers and Navajo warriors during the 1800's. The wars were a result of White settlers invading Navajo lands and raiding their villages.

In the late-eighteenth century, the Navajos became involved in direct conflict with Spanish forces intent on conquering the Southwest. The Spanish formed alliances with the Comanches and Utes to weaken the Navajos, and many fell victim to the Spanish slave trade.

They had a matrilineal culture and lived through hunting and gathering. Influence by Europeans led the Navajo to adopt with farming, silver smithing, and livestock raising, but they were unable to escape a reservation, starvation, and diseases at the hands of Europeans and the U.S.

The forced removal of the Navajo, which began in January 1864 and lasted two months, came to be known as the "Long Walk." ing to historic accounts, more than 8,500 men, women, and children were forced to leave their homes in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico.

The term Navajo Wars covers at least three distinct periods of conflict in the American West: the Navajo against the Spanish (late 16th century through 1821); the Navajo against the Mexican government (1821 through 1848); and the Navajo against the United States (after the 1847–48 Mexican–American War).

Believed to have initially settled there around the year 1400, the Navajo were primarily hunters and gatherers and transitioned to become farmers and herders as they were influenced by Spanish Colonists in the 1600s.
