The Vanderbilt scale was shown to have an excellent internal consistency reliability (0.90 ≤ α ≤ 0.95) as well as high concurrent validity (r = 0.79; [21]) when related to the Computerized Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (C-DISC-IV; National Institute of Mental Health, 1997) [22].

The Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Parent Rating Scale is used to help in the diagnostic process of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children between the ages of 6 and 12. It has a total of 55 questions, includes all 18 of the DSM criteria for ADHD and should be completed by a parent of the child.

The VADRS has proven to be a reliable tool with strong psychometric properties. Wolraich et al. (2003) concluded that the internal consistency and factor structure of the parent version of the VADRS are acceptable, and consistent with other measures of ADHD as well as DSM-IV criteria.

To meet criteria for ADHD there must be at least 2 items of the performance set in which the child scores a 4, or 1 item of the performance set in which the child scores a 5; ie, there must be impairment, not just symptoms, to meet diagnostic criteria.

Results: The internal consistency and factor structure of the VADPRS are acceptable and consistent with DSM-IV and other accepted measures of ADHD. Conclusion: The VADPRS is a reliable, cost-effective assessment for ADHD in clinical and research settings.

The CAARS test manual states that “this index is the best screen for identifying those 'at risk' for ADHD” (Conners et al., 1998, p. 23). The ADHD Index is reported to have 71% sensitivity and 75% specificity (Conners et al., 1998). Sensitivity and specificity of other subscales are not reported.

The Conners Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire may be the most effective diagnostic tool for ADHD because of its brevity and high diagnostic accuracy, and the CBCL-AP could be used for more comprehensive assessments.
