You must surrender your vehicle registration and plates to the DMV before the New York State liability insurance is cancelled. If you register your vehicle in another state and surrender the New York vehicle plates to the New York DMV, you can get insurance in the other state.

If you do not have liability insurance, you must surrender your vehicle plates to the DMV immediately. If your liability insurance is about to lapse and you don't plan to replace it with other insurance, surrender your vehicle plates to the DMV before the lapse.

How much do I need to pay? Example 1: If your insurance lapse is 25 days, you may pay a civil penalty of $200 ($8 per day for 25 days) and not turn in your plates, or you must surrender your plates and serve a registration suspension of 25 days.

Do not return your old plates to DMV. Destroy your old plates so that they cannot be reused. If your plates are not destroyed and someone else uses them, you could be held responsible for any traffic tickets written against the plates and for any fines resulting from the tickets.

Before you end the vehicle's liability insurance coverage If you do not turn in your plate(s), we will suspend your registration and can suspend your driver license.

To cancel a vehicle's registration and remove it from your insurance policy, you can use any drop box location or our mail-in address to surrender your plates. Your plate surrender receipt will be mailed to you. Plate surrender forms will be available at the drop boxes or can be downloaded below: Plate Surrender Form.

You must complete the Plate Surrender Application (PDF) (PD-7) for each set of plates that you are surrendering.

If one plate (from a set of two plates) is lost, stolen or destroyed, you don't need to complete a police report. Bring the plate you have to your county's DMV office to surrender the registration.
