Positive Regulation of the Cell Cycle Two groups of proteins, called cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks), are responsible for the progress of the cell through the various checkpoints. The levels of the four cyclin proteins fluctuate throughout the cell cycle in a predictable pattern (Figure 2).

Interphase is composed of G1 phase (cell growth), followed by S phase (DNA synthesis), followed by G2 phase (cell growth). At the end of interphase comes the mitotic phase, which is made up of mitosis and cytokinesis and leads to the formation of two daughter cells.

Biological regulation is an organism's ability to deal with the effects of a disruption by controlling its own inherent dynamics in response to changes in its internal and external environments.

Cyclins. Cyclins are among the most important core cell cycle regulators. Cyclins are a group of related proteins, and there are four basic types found in humans and most other eukaryotes: G ‍ cyclins, G ‍ /S cyclins, S cyclins, and M cyclins.

A cell cycle is a series of events that takes place in a cell as it grows and divides. A cell spends most of its time in what is called interphase, and during this time it grows, replicates its chromosomes, and prepares for cell division.

Any process that controls the series of events by which a cell goes through the cell cycle. During the cell cycle, a cell makes a copy of its DNA and other contents, and divides in two. When cell cycle regulation doesn't happen correctly, cells may divide in an uncontrolled way, and diseases such as cancer can occur.

The G ‍ checkpoint. The G ‍ checkpoint is the main decision point for a cell – that is, the primary point at which it must choose whether or not to divide. Once the cell passes the G ‍ checkpoint and enters S phase, it becomes irreversibly committed to division.

The key factors in cell cycle regulation—cyclins and CDKs—have been extensively studied for their role in meiosis (Wolgemuth, 2008, 2011; Wolgemuth and Roberts, 2010). CDK1 is the master regulator of the mammalian cell cycle and is indispensable for embryo development.
