Neuromuscular reeducation can include movement, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense, posture, and proprioception, but heed these coding tips. The proper reporting of neuromuscular reeducation (NMR) is one of the more significant coding dilemmas faced by chiropractors.

CPT 97112 – Neuromuscular Re-education: Therapeutic procedure, 1 or more areas, each 15 minutes; neuromuscular reeducation of movement, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense, posture, and/or proprioception for sitting and/or standing activities.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) or Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) while performing a therapeutic exercise or functional activity may be billed as 97032. Do not bill for CPT codes 97110, 97112, 97116 or 97530 for the same time period.

CPT® code 97110: Therapy procedure using exercise to develop strength, endurance, range of motion and flexibility, each 15 minutes.

97761: Prosthetic Training This CPT code involves training with a prosthetic limb.

The definition of 97112: Therapeutic procedure, one or more areas, each 15 minutes – Neuromuscular Reeducation of movement, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense, posture and/or proprioception for sitting and/or standing activities.

Per the American Medical Association (AMA), CPT code 97761 is defined as “Prosthetic training, upper and/or lower extremities, initial prosthetic encounter, each 15 minutes”.

Remember, justification for the use of Neuromuscular re-ed instead of Ther. Ex stems from your intent. So if your intent is to improve someone's coordination with squatting and to improve stability through balance training and targeted recruitment of the glutes – that's Neuromuscular Re-Ed!
