Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) must follow five basic functions to be comprehensive in nature. In DBT, there are 3 categories of targets: life-threatening behavior, therapy-interfering behavior, and quality-of-life-interfering behavior. Imminent and upcoming risk takes precedence for discussion over past patient behavior and urges.

This is usually a 90-minute session during which time a detailed intake will gather pertinent information and history to determine if DBT is the appropriate course of treatment and treatment recommendations will be made. During this time, you or your loved one will also receive orientation to the model of DBT.

DBT Skills Mindfulness: the practice of being fully aware and present in this one moment. Distress Tolerance: how to tolerate pain in difficult situations, not change it. Interpersonal Effectiveness: how to ask for what you want and say no while maintaining self-respect and relationships with others.

Examples of target behaviors: reducing the amount of cigarettes smoked; leaving the house more often; attending more social functions; going on daily walks; decreasing avoidance or procrastination.
