Bottom Line. No the flag cannot prevent your deployment forward.

(5) DA Form 268 is prepared to remove a Flag when the Soldier's status changes from unfavorable to favorable and the Flag is removed from the HR systems within 3 working days.

Answer: Yes. If a Soldier is flagged the PPW system will remove the Soldier from the promotion standing list and place the Soldier into a NOT Eligible status.

Paragraph 5-32 of the regulation states: A Soldier with a FLAG in effect may be considered by the board and placed on the recommended list. However, the Soldier cannot be promoted until the FLAG has been lifted (nonwaivable).

Likewise, when a Soldier's status changes from unfavorable to favorable the flag is removed immediately. A flag is designed to suspend actions that are considered favorable to the Soldier until the Soldier has been trained and the original incident or action has been rectified or corrected.

Will I know if I am Flagged? Yes; the flagging authority, unit commander, or first line supervisor will counsel all Soldiers in writing upon initiation of any Flag within 2 working days, unless counseling will interfere with an ongoing investigation. The Flag will also be visible on the Soldier's ERB or ORB.

There is no expiration to a Soldier's promotable status. Follow us and never miss a post! MacArthur D. "Mackie" Ocampo is an Active Duty First Sergeant and has served in the Army for 15 years to date with 9 years of service as a Human Resources Specialist.

Promotable Soldiers in the grade of E-4 will be allowed to stay up to 12 years.
