Incorporated in 1958 Lake Lotawana is the largest private lake in the Kansas City area. The lake is 480 acres of surface water with 27 miles of shoreline.

Lake Lotawana was conceived, purchased, built and developed by Milton Thompson, owner of nearby Highland Farms, the world's largest Hereford cattle breeding farm at that time (1927). He had previously developed nearby Lake Tapawingo, a lake community with retreats for wealthy Kansas City businessmen.

Lake Lotawana is a private lake. Only homeowners with houses on the lake and boats registered to the current year may gain access to the lake. The following volunteers can be contacted by text or phone to obtain the boat ramp and/or storage lot combinations for access.

Skiing shall be permitted only during the following hours: sunrise to 10:00 am and 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm.
