Positive politeness strategies are intended to avoid giving offense by highlighting friendliness. These strategies include juxtaposing criticism with compliments, establishing common ground, and using jokes, nicknames, honorifics, tag questions, special discourse markers (please), and in-group jargon and slang.

Politeness theory maintains the universality of an individual's positive and negative face wants in all cultures. During everyday interaction, individuals often perform actions that threaten face. They therefore use politeness strategies to mitigate face threats.

The three most common factors affecting the politeness of an utterance are: Social Distance. Power. Rank of Imposition.

Brown and Levinson (1987) suggest that there are four types of politeness strategies. They are bald on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record strategy. Politeness strategies are often used in real life situation in order to maintain each other's faces.

Levinson, politeness theory argues that most commonplace speech acts such as criticizing, inviting, advising or even complimenting, carry an element of risk for speaker and hearer. With each speech act we can cause a potential damage to the person of either hearer or speaker, or both of them.

Politeness theory, proposed by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson, centers on the notion of politeness, construed as efforts on redressing the affronts to a person's self-esteems or effectively claiming positive social values in social interactions.

Positive politeness strategies highlight friendliness and camaraderie between the speaker and hearer; the speaker's wants are in some way similar to the hearer's wants. There are many ways to accomplish this familiarity and claim common ground.
