The sleep–wake cycle is a neurobiological phenomenon that shows intervals of activity alternating with restfulness that appears with a periodicity approximating the 24-hour day-night cycle.

Sleep-wake disorders occur when the body's internal clock does not work properly or is out of sync with the surrounding environment. The body has an internal timing system called the circadian system that regulates daily behavior and bodily functions through cycles called circadian rhythms.

the natural, brain-controlled bodily rhythm that results in alternate periods of sleep and wakefulness.

Most people's natural circadian cycle is slightly greater than 24 hours. Some people naturally wake up early and some naturally stay up late. For example, it is natural for many teens to prefer later bedtimes and to sleep later in the morning than adults. The rhythm and timing of the body clocks also decline with age.

Sleep occurs in five stages: wake, N1, N2, N3, and REM. Stages N1 to N3 are considered non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, with each stage a progressively deeper sleep.

The optic nerve in your eyes senses the morning light. Then the SCN triggers the release of cortisol and other hormones to help you wake up. But when darkness comes at night, the SCN sends messages to the pineal gland. This gland triggers the release of the chemical melatonin.
