There is a worldwide consensus that the CEDAW principles are important goals: to date, 186 of 193 countries have ratified the treaty. The United States is one of only seven countries—including Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Nauru, Palau and Tonga—that have not yet ratified CEDAW.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is an international legal instrument that requires countries to eliminate discrimination against women and girls in all areas and promotes women's and girls' equal rights.

The States party to the Convention must submit a report to the Committee one year after the treaty enters into force for that country and then “at least every four years” (Art. 18.2 of CEDAW). The Committee meets only once a year for “a period of not more than two weeks” (Art. 20 of CEDAW).

The Committee monitors the implementation of national measures to fulfil this obligation. At each of its sessions, the Committee reviews national reports submitted by the States parties within one year of ratification or accession, and thereafter every four years.
