Idaho's land mass is about 63% public, making our state one of the largest public lands holders in the nation. Under the umbrella of “public land” are many different subcategories of lands and waters run by agencies with a variety of missions and priorities.

Recreation opportunities abound throughout the diverse landscapes of Idaho's 12 million acres of BLM-managed public land. These public lands host many unique and special outdoor opportunities where visitors can enjoy some of the most scenic spots in Idaho and learn more about the state's history.

Instead, BLM lands, as well as forests and parks are identified by angular boundaries. The shades of white, tan, brown, and green are used to identify variances of vegetation, trees, and soil compositions. Not all BLM lands are represented by angular boundaries.

The BLM does not offer much land for sale because of its congressional mandate, passed in 1976, to generally retain these lands in public ownership. However, the BLM does occasionally sell parcels of land where our land-use planning finds disposal is appropriate.

BLM Idaho. The BLM manages nearly 12 million acres of public lands in Idaho, nearly one-fourth of the state's total land area, for multiple uses.

Most BLM sites in Idaho are offered on a first- come, first-serve basis. In undeveloped areas, you may camp for up to 14 days before having to move at least 25 miles from your original spot. You may not return to that area for 28 consecutive days. Choose camp sites that have already been used or established.

About 14% of the public land in Idaho has been protected with a wilderness designation and is off-limits to mining and timber harvesting.

The BLM manages nearly 12 million acres of public lands for multiple use in Idaho, representing nearly one-fourth of the state's total land area. Through balanced management, we sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
