The Appellate Division is New York State's intermediate level appellate court. It hears appeals from trial courts and has jurisdiction to hear certain original proceedings commenced in or transferred to it as provided by law.

The appellate division is composed of four departments. Each department of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, resolves appeals from the superior courts in civil and criminal cases. The appellate division also reviews civil appeals taken from the lower courts functioning as appellate courts.

There are four Appellate Divisions of the Supreme Court, one in each of the State's four Judicial Departments.

There are 13 appellate courts that sit below the U.S. Supreme Court, and they are called the U.S. Courts of Appeals. The 94 federal judicial districts are organized into 12 regional circuits, each of which has a court of appeals.

An appellate term is an intermediate appellate court that hears appeals from the inferior courts within their designated counties or judicial districts, and are intended to ease the workload on the Appellate Division and provide a less expensive forum closer to the people.

The Court of Appeals is New York State's highest court and court of last resort in most cases. The Court, which sits in Albany, is composed of a chief judge and six associate judges, each appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the senate, to a 14-year term of office.
