About the company Almost 135,000 people work full-time in New York City's public school system, with the shared mission of providing our 1.1 million students with an education that gives them the tools to thrive in college, in careers, and as active members of their communities.

Traditionally we talk about the number of students on a CASELOAD. The caseload model assigns students without consideration for the intensity of services or amount of time needed to provide them. It is a head count. WORKLOAD takes into consideration the supports and services needed by each unique student.

In essence, the workload approach looks at how the therapist's time is spent versus the number of students with IEPs/IFSPs/504 Plans the therapist serves. A caseload approach looks solely at the number of students needing services or the number of intervention sessions required.

Caseload management sets out the kind and volume of work undertaken by the supervisee. A head count of case files or even of individual service users or families is not usually a good indication of the actual work involved.

Workload and caseload are not interchangeable terms. Caseload is only one part of the picture. An SLP may need to allocate significant time for additional important and necessary workload activities whenever a student is added to a caseload for direct services.

Traditionally, a school SLP's workload has been conceptualized as being almost exclusively synonymous with caseload. Caseload is more accurately conceptualized as only one part of SLPs' total workload.
