Am I exempt from Minnesota withholding?

You may claim exempt from Minnesota withholding if at least one of these apply: You meet the requirements and claim exempt from federal withholding. You had no Minnesota income tax liability last year, received a refund of all Minnesota income tax withheld, and do not expect to owe state income tax this year.

By placing a “0” on line 5, you are indicating that you want the most amount of tax taken out of your pay each pay period. If you wish to claim 1 for yourself instead, then less tax is taken out of your pay each pay period.

If you are single and have one job, or married and filing jointly then claiming one allowance makes the most sense. An individual can claim two allowances if they are single and have more than one job, or are married and are filing taxes separately.

Form W-4MN, Minnesota Employee Withholding Allowance/Exemption Certificate, is the Minnesota equivalent of federal Form W-4. Your employees must complete Form W-4MN to determine their Minnesota tax withheld. You also may need to submit Forms W-4MN to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

Under North Dakota Century Code (N.D.C.C.) § 57-38-31.1, a passthrough entity is required to withhold North Dakota income tax at the rate of 2.90% from a nonresident member's North Dakota distributive share of income if (1) it is $1,000 or more and (2) it is not included in a composite return.

How much tax do I withhold? You may either: Use the supplemental withholding rate of 6.25%. Have your employee or payee complete federal Form W-4 or Minnesota Form W-4MN.

Any wage or salary made by a Minnesota or Montana resident working in North Dakota is taxable only to their resident state. If your employer withheld North Dakota income taxes from wages you earned in North Dakota, you will need to file a North Dakota individual income tax return to claim a refund of that withholding.

Minnesota Withholding Tax is state income tax you as an employer take out of your employees' wages. You then send this money as deposits to the Minnesota Department of Revenue and file withholding tax returns. Withholding tax applies to almost all payments made to employees for services they provide for your business.
