The vision of the Gauteng Department of Education is to ensure that all learners in Gauteng do well at school and leave their institutions with the values, knowledge, skills and qualifications that will give them the best chance of success in their adult lives.

This subject addresses knowledge, values, attitudes and skills about the self, the environment, responsible citizenship, a healthy and productive life, social engagement, recreation and physical activity, and career choices.

It provides learners with a variety of opportunities to develop and master the knowledge, skills and values related to the subject. Informal assessment should be used to provide feedback to the learners and to inform planning. It should not be seen as separate from learning activities taking place during a lesson.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education seeks to develop the citizens of this Province by providing quality learning, teaching and service at all educational institutions within its jurisdiction. It is our belief that this will lead to a well skilled, knowledgeable and progressive citizenry.

Life Orientation is a mandatory subject in the South African CAPS curriculum. It's studied by Senior Phase students in Grades 7-9. During Intermediate Phase, children will study Life Skills. The CAPS guidance for Life Orientation states that the subject's main focus is the development of self in society.
