Significant fossils, such as vertebrate fossils, must not be collected. Sites containing vertebrate fossils or trackways, exceptionally preserved or diverse fossils or important new fossils sites must be reported to government (Use Report a Fossil form).

PLEASE ALLOW FOR THESE TO TAKE UP TO THREE WEEKS. PERMITS CAN BE ISSUED OR RENEW IN PERSON AT THE FLORIDA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY'S DICKINSON HALL BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Collected fossils remain public property and are placed with museums, universities or other public institutions for study and exhibition. You may collect reasonable quantities of common invertebrate fossils such as mollusks and trilobites, but this must be for personal use, and the fossils may not be bartered or sold.

WHERE: THE BEST BEACHES IN THE STATE for collecting are on the west coast at Venice Beach and just to the south on Manasota Key. On the east coast some finds occur on Jacksonville Beach and beaches directly north.

In Florida it is illegal to collect vertebrate fossils (excluding shark teeth) without a permit from lands owned by the state. State lands include the bottoms of navigable waterways like rivers, lakes and some streams.
