If your rabbits live outside Place the hutch in a position that faces the morning sun. Make sure that your rabbits have access to shade, especially on sunny days, and that they are protected from the rain, wind, and any other adverse weather conditions.

Invest in a good-quality tarpaulin with eyelets that you can put right over the hutch and run and secure when it's very cold, wet or windy. If your rabbits' living quarters are in a shed, you can insulate the inside walls with commercial wall-insulation boards.

Rabbit hutches should be one square foot for every pound of an adult rabbit weight. The hutch should be at least 20 inches high and higher for larger breed rabbits. Many hutches are made with 16-gauge wire for the sides and tops and 14-gauge wire for the floor.

Keep Your Hutch Off the Ground Hutches that sit on the ground can also expose your rabbits to predators. All of our hutches are raised to mitigate these problems. If you place your run on the ground, make sure to place it on a hard surface so that your rabbits can't dig out.

Rabbit hutches are usually built a few inches or feet above the ground. The elevated level serves to protect rabbits from disturbances and predators on the ground. Multiple level hutches are designed to allow for ground access while still providing necessary protection.

Solid wood is best as it is warmer, more predator proof and will last longer. You should be able to securely bolt the doors and any wire mesh should be firmly attached to repel foxes, cats and dogs. The hutch should be raised off the ground on legs to repel predators and prevent the base becoming sodden wet.
