The causative agent of this disease is Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), which causes systemic symptoms, such as spots on leaves, dying of flower buds, shoots and branches, cracking or canker in branches and trunks, white or reddish-brown exudates leaking from pruning cuts, scars, lenticels and lesions. (Fig.

Pseudomonas syringae is one of the most common plant pathogens that infect the phyllosphere. P. syringae can live on the plant surface as an epiphyte. To cause disease, it enters the plant, through wounds or natural openings such as stomata, and multiplies within the apoplast.

Pseudomonas syringae survives on plant surfaces. The bacterium is spread by splashing rain. Disease development is favored by high moisture and low temperatures in spring. Affected limbs may fail to leaf out in the spring or may produce new growth, which dies soon after temperatures increase in the summer.

The most common strategy for controlling diseases caused by Pseudomonas syringae is, as it has been for more than 5 decades, to spray bactericides. These mainly include a variety of copper compounds or other heavy metals, with or without various combinations of fungicides or other pest-control chemicals.

In the spring the pathogen is spread from infected tissues to healthy plants primarily by windblown rain and by insects. It enters the plant through natural openings and wounds, usually on leaves or shoots.
