Winches shall have clearly identifiable and readily accessible stop controls. Portable winches shall be secured against accidental shifting while in use. Portable winches shall be fitted with limit switches if employees have access to areas from which it is possible to be drawn into the winch.

Winch Maintenance Check List: Regularly lubricate all grease points. Inspect all bolts. Inspect all electrical connections, (even at the battery) and cable. Check to ensure there is no worn coatings or corrosion on electrical connections. Tighten all connections.

Never straddle a winch line (we hope it's obvious why), and when winching, avoid standing between the vehicle and its anchor point. Anyone not involved with the actual winching should get behind a vehicle, rock or tree and stay a safe distance away from the cable.

A: The general rule for choosing a winch is to get one rated at 1.5 times the gross weight of the vehicle. Gross weight is the total weight of the vehicle plus the driver, fuel, and any gear or tools that will be carried.

Never engage or disengage clutch if winch is under load, winch rope is in tension or drum is moving. Never touch winch rope or hook while under tension or under load. Always stand clear of winch rope and load and keep others away while winching. Never use vehicle to pull load on winch rope.

Always wear eye protection and heavy gloves when operating the winch. Always keep body, hair, clothing and jewelry clear of the winch cable, fairlead and hook when operating winch. Never attempt to “jerk” a load attached to the winch with a moving vehicle. See the Shock Loading section on Shock Loading.

Winch failure, rope breakage, and severe wear and tear. Personal injury or death. Loss of load. Damage to truck.
