As a shipper, you are responsible for declaring the dangerous goods in your package and informing your carriers and customers that lithium batteries contain hazardous materials that can cause chemical burns, electric shock, explosions, and extreme heat when improperly handled.

A lithium battery mark is not required for packages prepared in ance with Section II of PI 967 or PI 970 containing only button cell batteries installed in equipment (including circuit boards) or consignments of two packages or less where each package contains no more than four cells, or two batteries installed ...

There are three types of cells that are used in lithium batteries: cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch cells.

Section II of the lithium battery packing instructions, PI 966, PI 967, PI 969 & PI 970, include a requirement that “Any person preparing or offering cells or batteries for transport must receive adequate instruction on these requirements commensurate with their responsibilities”.
