IRS Form 2441 is used to report child and dependent care expenses as part of your Federal income tax return. By reporting these expenses, you may be entitled to a tax credit of up to $3,000 for one qualifying person or $6,000 for two or more qualifying people.

For 2022, the credit for child and dependent care expenses is nonrefundable and you may claim the credit on qualifying employment-related expenses of up to $3,000 if you had one qualifying person, or $6,000 if you had two or more qualifying persons.

For 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act has made changes to the credit for child and dependent care expenses reported on Form 2441. The amount of qualifying expenses has been increased to: $8,000 (previously $3,000) for one qualifying child or up to. $16,000 (previously $6,000) for two or more qualifying children.

Limits on who can provide care Your spouse. A parent of the child being cared for—for example, you couldn't claim the credit if you pay your ex-spouse to care for the children you have together. Anyone listed as a dependent on your tax return.

For 2022, the maximum amount is $5,000. For married employees filing separate returns, the maximum amount is $2,500. If you had an employer-provided dependent care plan, your employer may have permitted you to carry forward any unused amount from 2020 and/or 2021 to use in 2022.
