There are four types of machine guards. Fixed machine guards, adjustable machine guards, interlocked machine guards, and self-adjusting machine guards are examples.

Any major repairs or tool changes that would expose workers to the machine's hazards require lockout/tagout. Although OSHA does not specify training requirements under the machine guarding regulations, the General Duty Clause requires that employers provide a safe work environment.

General requirements for machine guards. Guards shall be affixed to the machine where possible and secured elsewhere if for any reason attachment to the machine is not possible. The guard shall be such that it does not offer an accident hazard in itself.

Fixed guards are permanent parts of a machine. These guards are preferable because they're simple and permanent. Interlocked guards automatically shut off or disengage power through a tripping mechanism when it is opened or removed. The machine cannot cycle or start until the guard is replaced.

Examples include shields to contain chips, sparks, sprays or other forms of flying debris; holding tools that an operator can use to handle materials going into the point of operation; and awareness barriers to warn people about hazards in the area.

There are four general types of guards: Fixed. Interlocked. Adjustable. Self-adjusting.
