Series EE savings bonds earnings can be exempt from state and local taxes. If you invest in Series EE savings bonds for college, you can exclude part or all of the interest you earn over decades from your income taxes when the bonds are redeemed.

If your total interest isn't more than $1500 for the year, and you're not otherwise required to report interest income on Schedule B, report the savings bond interest with your other interest on the "Interest" line of your tax return. For more information, see the Instructions for Schedule B (Form 1040).

Use Form 8815 to figure your modified AGI. For 2022, the exclusion begins to phase out at: $77,200 if you file single. $115,750 if you're married filing jointly or a qualifying widow(er)

Interest from your bonds goes on your federal income tax return on the same line with other interest income.

Income limitations also apply, with a modified adjusted gross income phaseout threshold of $128,650 and a ceiling of $158,650 (as adjusted for inflation for tax years beginning in 2022) for married taxpayers filing jointly and a threshold of $85,800 and a ceiling of $100,800 for all other returns.

Interest income from Treasury bills, notes and bonds - This interest is subject to federal income tax, but is exempt from all state and local income taxes.

The interest on EE bonds isn't taxed as it accrues unless the owner elects to have it taxed annually. If an election is made, all previously accrued but untaxed interest is also reported in the election year. In most cases, this election isn't made so bond holders receive the benefits of tax deferral.

Your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is less than: $100,800 if single, head of household, or qualifying widow(er); $158,650 if married filing jointly.
