Volution. To begin this chapter, give some examples of macroevolution. Include at least one novel example not in your text. Section 1 2. In what type of rock are fossils found? 3. What do we not know from analyzing rock strata? 4. Rocks and fossils are dated in several ways. Relative dating uses the order of rock strata to determine the relative age of fossils. Radiometric dating uses the decay of radioactive isotopes to determine the age of the rocks or fossils.

  3. Read the overview section carefully. Provide at least one example of macroevolution in the space provided, ensuring it is a novel example not covered in your textbook.
  4. In Section 1, answer the question regarding the type of rock where fossils are found by writing in the specific rock type.
  5. Address what we do not know from analyzing rock strata by providing your insights in the space indicated.
  6. For questions involving radiometric dating, refer to Figure 23.3 and detail your understanding of the concept in writing.
  7. Complete the question about carbon-14 dating by explaining its age range and any indirect methods for dating fossils beyond this range.
  8. Identify and list three groups of tetrapods in the response area, and cite three ways to distinguish mammal fossils from the other groups.
  9. Move on to Section 2 and define continental drift. Use the space provided to explain how continents can move.
  10. Using Figure 23.8, indicate where India was located 65 million years ago. Answer related questions about geological phenomena in the areas provided.
  11. Summarize the causes and impacts of mass extinctions, particularly the Permian and Cretaceous events, ensuring clarity in your explanations.
  12. In Section 3, address the merger of biology fields in the study of evodevo, and describe any changes in evolutionary timing or development.
  13. Conclude by writing about homeotic genes and their relevance to evolutionary changes in morphology.
  14. Finally, review all sections for completeness and clarity. Save your changes, download the completed form, or share as necessary.

The evidence for an early "RNA world" includes the discovery of ribozymes, the ability of RNA to store genetic information, and the potential for RNA to replicate itself. Fossils are found in sedimentary rocks. From analyzing rock strata, we do not know the exact relationships or causes of evolutionary events.

Ancient sediments and rocks record past changes in atmospheric composition due to chemical reactions with Earth's crust and, in particular, to biochemical processes associated with life. Earth's original atmosphere was rich in methane, ammonia, water vapour, and the noble gas neon, but it lacked free oxygen.

Over hundreds of millions of years, the movement of plates within the earth crust has caused the continents to split apart from one another. Therefore it is possible that a freshwater reptile was present across a single environment then died and created a fossil record, and was then split when the continents shifted.

Many different patterns can be observed across the tree of life at a grand scale (Figure 1), including stability, gradual change, rapid change, adaptive radiations, extinctions, the co-evolution of two or more species, and convergent evolution in traits between species -- just to name a few.

Thomas Cech proposed that RNA was the first genetic material. Cech observed RNA molecules and came to the conclusion that RNA molecules split through chemical reactions even without proteins. Previously, people had thought that RNA could not catalyze biochemical reactions.

Scientists collect information that allows them to make evolutionary connections between organisms. Similar to detective work, scientists must use evidence to uncover the facts. In the case of phylogeny, evolutionary investigations focus on two types of evidence: morphologic (form and function) and genetic.

Unlike previous extinction events caused by natural phenomena, the sixth mass extinction is driven by human activity, primarily (though not limited to) the unsustainable use of land, water and energy use, and climate change.

Rocks and fossils are dated in several ways. Relative dating uses the order of rock strata to determine the relative age of fossils. Radiometric dating uses the decay of radioactive isotopes to determine the age of the rocks or fossils. It is based on the rate of decay, or half-life of the isotope.
