Many of the gender stereotypes we know today were not always present in the past; they are relatively new trends in human society. This is because social expectations of each gender change over time, and often develop differently in cultures around the world.

New ideas like socialism, nationalism and women's rights helped transform traditional attitudes and expectations. As a result, gender roles began to shift and change. The labor-intensive Industrial Revolution brought many women out of the home to work in factories. Colonized people began to resist European control.

The significance of gender roles in Things Fall Apart is that each gender has its distinct place in Igbo society. As traditional Igbo society begins to change with the arrival of British colonists, the gender roles begin to change as well.

In the Umuofian society, Women and men have different roles and expectations to live up to, men were believed to be superior and that women were inferior. One of the tasks that women were burdened with was dinner. They were expected to prepare dinner for their family in the Umuofia tradition.

The dominant role for women is: first, to make a pure bride for an honorable man, second, to be a submissive wife, and third, to bear many children. The ideal man provides for his family materially and has prowess on the battlefield.

Okonkwo's wealth points to his industriousness which the masculine gender is known for in Achebe's Things Fall Apart, while his masculinity enables him to marry three wives and keep them under his control. Thus the male and female genders have been unevenly portrayed.

In Things fall apart, women are featured as the main children's educators. They do these by telling them stories, teaching them the ethics of socializing with other people and good behavior especially to the girl child, 'children sat around their mother's cooking fire telling stories' (Achebe 25).

Gender roles in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart are very strict. Women are expected to provide dinner for their husband and children, and tensions arise when this doesn't happen. In addition, only sons can inherit from their fathers. This causes further tension, both for Okonkwo's daughter and for his eldest son.
