How to Configure Syslog on a Cisco Device Step 1: Enable logging on the Cisco device. ... Step 2: Modify the syslog config for facility codes. ... Step 3: Change the default logging levels. ... Syslog is a protocol that computer systems use to send event data logs to a central location for storage. Logs can then be accessed by analysis and reporting software to perform audits, monitoring, troubleshooting, and other essential IT operational tasks.

Configure Dashboard Syslog servers can be defined in the Dashboard from Network-wide > Configure > General. Click the Add a syslog server link to define a new server. An IP address, UDP port number, and the roles to send to the server need to be defined. Multiple syslog servers can be configured.

The syslog daemon (syslogd) processing is controlled by a configuration file called /etc/syslog. conf, in which you define logging rules and output destinations for error messages, authorization violation messages, and trace data. Logging rules are defined using a facility name and a priority code.

Syslog messages are log messages generated by the NTP time server to inform system managers of the current state of the NTP Time Server. As well as storing syslog messages is a local log file on the NTP time server, they can also be transmitted over a network to a syslog monitoring machine.

Syslog runs on UDP, where syslog servers listen to UDP port 514 and clients (sending log messages) use a port above 1023. Note that a syslog server will not send a message back to the client, but the syslog log server can communicate, normally using port 514.

TCP is a connection-oriented and reliable transmission protocol that can use the same port 514 to send syslog messages to syslog daemons. TCP is used by default for data transmission in syslog collecting tools like rsyslog and syslog-ng. The syslogd sends an acknowledgement for every syslog message received.

The default protocol for sending syslogs is UDP with a default port of 514.
