One of the common molding methods for PTFE is the compression molding method, as shown in Figure 5. In the compression molding method, the material is placed in a mold and force is applied from both above and below the mold to press the material together.

Isostatic molding is a unique process where molding pressures are applied evenly in all directions around the part being made. This differs from compression molding, which has pressure applied in only one direction. Isostatic molding lends itself nicely to making odd shapes such as cups and buckets.

Compression moulding It is sometimes referred to as matched-die moulding, where the fibre-reinforced composite material is forced to deform or flow within the mould cavity.

Since PTFE will not flow above its melting point, it cannot be injection molded and requires special processing techniques. Molded PTFE is processed by first compression molding the powder into preforms, and then sintering the preforms in a process analogous to sintered metal processing.

Sintering is a process in which the pressed PTFE material is heated to produce the finished raw material – ready for machining. Because the optimal structure in the PTFE material is achieved through correct heating and cooling, the procedure has to be closely controlled and monitored.

Transfer molding is different from compression molding in that the mold is enclosed rather than open to the fill plunger resulting in higher dimensional tolerances and less environmental impact. Compared to injection molding, transfer molding uses higher pressures to uniformly fill the mold cavity.

Compression molding is a common polymer manufacturing process for thermosets, thermoplastics, as well as elastomers and natural rubbers. It produces high-volume, dimensionally precise, high-strength, temperature resistant parts with good surface quality.
