Scripture affirms that Christians are pilgrims. In the paradigmatic covenant made with our father Abraham, God promised him Canaan as "the land of your sojournings" (Gen. 17:8). And in the New Testament, Peter reflects the same idea when he describes his readers as "elect exiles" (1 Peter 1:1; cf.

JEREMIAH 6:16. A pilgrimage is a journey to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion. A pilgrim is more than a tourist and a pilgrimage is more than a journey. A pilgrim travels with a spiritual purpose, a goal to be closer to God.

“Journey” focuses on the process of getting there, not the arrival. Christians are being transformed into Christ's image “from one degree of glory to another” (2 Corinthians 3:18). This is a process that continues throughout our earthly life.
