The Jungle was written to demonstrate the evils of the capitalist system in America. In the novel, Upton Sinclair shows the way the capitalist system exploits the working class, gives absolute power to the wealthy few, and forces individuals to act only out of self-interest, regardless of the suffering of others.

A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. The theme is echoed in the triumph of protagonists including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal over their enemies, as well as Mowgli's.

The main theme of The Jungle is the evil of capitalism. Every event, especially in the first twenty-seven chapters of the book, is chosen deliberately to portray a particular failure of capitalism, which is, in Sinclair's view, inhuman, destructive, unjust, brutal, and violent.

What was the author's purpose in writing "The Jungle?" Sinclair wanted his novel to call attention to the atrocities committed against the working class in 1900s Chicago, especially European immigrants. It was Sinclair's hope that wealthy people reading his novel would advocate for social change in this direction.

The Jungle is a novel by American muckraker author Upton Sinclair, known for his efforts to expose corruption in government and business in the early 20th century.

The activist novel The Jungle made Upton Sinclair world famous overnight. Lithuanian Jurgis Rudkus emigrates to the United States with his family. His American dream of a hard-working, prosperous life turns into a nightmare when he finds work in a Chicago slaughterhouse.

The Jungle Revolts Readers Sinclair splattered The Jungle with blood and guts as he chronicled the unsanitary conditions inside Chicago's meatpacking plants. As readers turned the novel's pages, their stomachs turned as well.

The main idea of The Jungle is the condemnation of Capitalism as portrayed through a searing criticism of the American meatpacking industry and its owners. Sinclair contrasts socialism as the preferred political ideology, and he sets up the working class as better equipped to share and distribute wealth fairly for all.
