To be eligible for hospice, an individual must meet the following criteria: be eligible for Medicaid; be certified as being terminally ill by a qualifying medical professional; elect hospice care in a written statement; and.

Hospice is comfort care without curative intent; the patient no longer has curative options or has chosen not to pursue treatment because the side effects outweigh the benefits. Palliative care is comfort care with or without curative intent.

Palliative care is a resource for anyone living with a serious illness, such as heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , cancer, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and many others. Palliative care can be helpful at any stage of illness and is best provided soon after a person is diagnosed.

This type of care can include: Medication to relieve symptoms and side effects. Other treatments, such as radiation therapy or surgery, to relieve symptoms and side effects. Physical therapy and rehabilitation. Nutritional changes. Spiritual and emotional support, including counseling and relaxation techniques.

Is palliative care the same as end of life care? No. Although it can include end of life care, palliative care is much broader and can last for longer. Having palliative care doesn't necessarily mean that you're likely to die soon – some people have palliative care for years.

Because we are a not-for-profit hospice, Ohio's Hospice provides care regardless of a patient's ability to pay. Patients benefit from an array of complementary and innovative therapies and continue treatments that provide comfort. Those costs are covered as well.

Both palliative care and hospice care provide comfort. But palliative care can begin at diagnosis, and at the same time as treatment. Hospice care begins after treatment of the disease is stopped and when it is clear that the person is not going to survive the illness.

The maximum length of eligibility for hospice is six months. This means that patients are not expected to live beyond six months at the time of their admission.
