The consequence of a piston leak is a decrease in the pump's efficiency as well as an increase in the pump structure vibration. In term of measured signal, the leakage introduces a periodic drop in the output pressure signal of the pump.

Piston pumps provide the greatest ranges of overall performance. They can be driven at high speeds to provide a high power-to-weight ratio. They can operate at pressure levels in excess of 5000 psi.

The stroke length is controlled by the swash plate angle. In variable-displacement models, the swash plate is installed in a movable yoke (Figure 3-17). By pivoting the yoke on pintles, the swash plate angle and piston stroke can be increased or decreased.

Axial piston pumps are positive displacement pumps that use multiple cylinders grouped around a central axis. The group of cylinders, usually containing an odd number, is called a cylinder block. The pistons within each cylinder are attached to a swashplate.

Fault analysis and troubleshooting of axial piston pump The steering is wrong or the inlet and outlet are connected reversely. The oil filter of the oil suction pipe is blocked. The hydraulic oil level in the oil tank is too low. The oil temperature is too high or the oil viscosity is too low.

The advantages of piston and plunger pumps are their self-priming capability (self-priming pump) and high efficiency; disadvantages include their pulsating delivery and, especially in the case of large units, their space requirements, their large mass and their high investment costs per unit of pump output.

A piston pump has high suction performance and a very good delivery rate, especially with highly viscous materials. The pump itself is robust and resilient, which is all the more important when processing heavy fluids.

An axial piston pump provides advantages in dependability, simplicity, and efficiency leading to its use in handling a wide range of tasks on a machine. The basic mechanics and design of an axial piston pump are also commonly combined with gearing designs to create axial piston motors.
