Use a rangefinder and GPS to record nest sites, nests, bird roosting, transects, and observation points. It may be beneficial to mark the trees to identify nesting trees and in order to protect the trees from being cut down if vegetation clearing or other land alterations may be pursued in the area.

Point-transect sampling is widely used for monitoring trends in abundance of songbirds. It is conceptualized as a “snapshot” method in which birds are “frozen” at a single location. With conventional methods, an observer records birds detected from a point for several minutes, during which birds may move around.

How Does the Breeding Bird Survey Work? Each year during the height of the avian breeding season, thousands of community scientists who are skilled in avian identification collect bird population data from roadside survey routes. Survey routes are roughly 25 miles long and are comprised of 50 point counts.

Point counts are one of several methods used to inventory and monitor bird populations. A point count is a tally of all birds detected by sight and sound by a single observer located at a fixed position during a specified period of time (i.e., 3 min.).

The basic method that has been chosen is based on setting up a single line at each site called a transect. Birds can be identified either visually, or by their calls. This method involves identifying all the birds you see or hear while standing at a series of points along a transect (a straight line through the site).

At what time of day should I undertake my survey? The ideal time of day to count birds in the breeding season is roughly one hour after sunrise until mid-morning (10-11am).

Transect Surveys: A transect consists of a person walking from point A to point B along a defined path. He or she counts the number of individual birds (of each species) seen and heard within a certain distance from their path (on both sides).

Vantage point surveys are designed specifically to assess flight activity and distribution over a survey area. The data produced are primarily used to assess the impacts of wind farms and developments that may affect the flight paths of target species, which are usually raptors, wildfowl, waders, or a mixture.
