The main difference is that Mathcounts sprint round has 30 questions instead of 25, and it is not multiple choice the way AMC 8 is. Those two things make Mathcounts slightly harder for the same level of problem difficulty.

Countdown Round: focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. This round is optional at the school, chapter and state level.

Practicing problems from every MATHCOUNTS topic will help ensure that no question is too difficult to solve. For example, if you missed a question from your practice session because you did not understand the concept. Make a note of it and take it upon yourself to learn how to solve that specific problem.

MATHCOUNTS competitions are very different from tests students take in class. For a MATHCOUNTS competition, a score of 23 out of 46 (or 50%) is absolutely fantastic! The Target Round of a MATHCOUNTS competition has four pairs of problems.

There are 4 levels in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series: school, chapter (local), state and national. Competition questions are written for students in grades 6-8. The competitions can be quite challenging, particularly for students who have not been coached using MATHCOUNTS materials.

It is no secret that MATHCOUNTS is a difficult event to compete in. There are a limited number of participants that qualify for the National Competition and an even smaller percentage of competitors end up finishing in the top percentile. However, this does not mean that students cannot improve the second time around!

The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that reaches students in grades 6-8 in all US states and territories with 2 extracurricular math programs. Hundreds of thousands of students participate in our programs or use our resources each year.
