Where cryotherapy treatments focus on the whole body, cryolipolysis targets a specific area. Instead of using a cold room or full-body machine to cool down skin and muscle, a smaller device is applied to one area of the body and left to go to work.

Studies show that up to 28% of the fat can dissipate four months after treatment, depending on the targeted area. While cryolipolysis is FDA-approved and considered to be a safe alternative to surgery, adverse effects can occur. One of these is something called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH.

While CoolSculpting is FDA approved for reducing small areas of body fat in many people, there are some people who should not try CoolSculpting. People who have the following conditions should not do this treatment because of the risk of severe complications. These conditions include: cryoglobulinemia.

Procedure Details Patients are awake during the procedure. A handheld device called an applicator is used to freeze the layer of fat cells (adipocytes) underneath the skin. First, a gel pad is applied to the area to protect the skin. Next, the fatty bulge is suctioned or vacuumed into the applicator's hallow opening.

CoolSculpting is a branded form of fat reduction method called cryolipolysis. It has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

The FDA has certified Coolsculpting and other cryolipolysis procedures as safe for use. Multiple reviews have concluded that cryolipolysis is a reliable, safe alternative to procedures like liposuction, with limited side effects.

Studies show that cryolipolysis is safe and effective. The risks are few and rare. There's no damage to your liver. Side effects are mild, too, and go away after a short time.
