One classification method is: Mild – below five per cent of syllables stuttered. Mild to moderate – 5 to 10 per cent of syllables stuttered. Moderate – 10 to 15 per cent of syllables stuttered. Approximately 5 to 10 percent of all children will stutter for some period in their life, lasting from a few weeks to several years.

The Palin Parent Rating Scale is a valid and reliable tool, providing a method of exploring parents' perceptions of stuttering, the impact it has on the child and themselves, and the parents' knowledge of and confidence in managing the stuttering.

A rating of 1 = “No Concern,” 2 = “Borderline Concern,” 3 = “Mild Concern,” 4 = “Moderate Concern,” and 5 = “Extreme Concern.” Data derived from the assess- ment can then guide a clinician in the planning of treatment. The CALMS assessment is NOT a standard- ized test or norm-referenced instrument.

This A-19 Scale is used to assess the attitudes of kindergarten through fourth grade students. The assessment was created by Susan Andre and Barry Guitar at the University of Vermont. The SSI-4 is a normed referenced assessment that helps identify stuttering severity in children and adults.

This evaluation tool was designed for children with ages ranging from 7 to 15 years. This inventory includes 22 individual items across the 5 CALMS domains. A rating from 1-5 is given for each item where the rating of 1 reflects a 'low impact' and 5 reflects a 'high impact'.

The OASES yields a score on a 5-point scale that indicates the amount of adverse impact a person experiences due to stuttering. Higher scores indicate higher levels of negative impact. Impact ratings reflect mild, mild-to-moderate, moderate, moderate-to-severe, and severe adverse impact.

Mild to moderate – 5 to 10 per cent of syllables stuttered. Moderate – 10 to 15 per cent of syllables stuttered. Moderate to severe – 15 to 20 per cent of syllables stuttered. Severe – above 20 per cent of syllables stuttered.
