The 3-dose primary series should begin as early as 6 weeks of age, with subsequent doses given with a minimum interval of 4 weeks between doses. The 3 booster doses should preferably be given during the second year of life (12–23 months), at 4–7 years of age, and at 9–15 years of age.

Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) and Td (Tetanus and Diphtheria) Vaccine. Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis). Td vaccine protects against tetanus and diphtheria.

There are no contraindications to the co-administration of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccines. You may administer DTaP, DT, Td, and Tdap with other indicated vaccines during the same visit. However, administer each vaccine using a separate syringe and, if possible, at a different anatomic site.

CDC recommends that all preteens and teens get a Tdap vaccine, preferably at 11 or 12 years old. Adults need to get a tetanus booster shot, either Td or Tdap, every 10 years to stay protected. Tetanus vaccines are safe. Most people who get a tetanus vaccine do not have serious problems with it.

CDC recommends tetanus vaccination for all babies and children, preteens and teens, and adults.

What vaccines protect against tetanus? There are 2 vaccines that help protect children against tetanus: DTaP and Tdap. Both also protect against diphtheria and whooping cough. These shots do not offer lifetime protection.

Adults. All adults who have never received one should get a Tdap shot. This can be given at any time, regardless of when they last got Td. This should be followed by either a Td or Tdap shot every 10 years.
