First, Southern Baptists cannot permit its missionaries to pray in tongues because what the latter claim is the biblical gift is not. The biblical gift of tongues was always “a legitimate language of some people group,” so the policy declares.

The primary difference between Baptists and other Christians is the practice of believers' baptism. Only people who have professed their faith can be baptized, in contrast to infant baptism practiced by most other Christian faiths, and baptism must occur by full-body immersion in water.

The separation was centered on two issues: the location of the foreign mission board and greater cooperation with White Baptists. The second split, also during Morris's presidency, came in 1915 over ownership and operation of the National Baptist Publishing Board.

The Baptists separated from the Church of England because they believed church membership should be voluntary and that only believers should be baptized. They rejected the parish structure of the Church of England where people were "born" into the church and baptized as infants.
