The Hess's law can also be stated as the enthalpy change for a chemical reaction is the same regardless of the path by which the reaction occurs. For example, consider following two paths for the preparation of methylene chloride. Path I : CH4(g)+2Cl2(g)→CH2Cl2(g)+2HCl(g)ΔH10=−202.

Answer and Explanation: Hence, 88.1 kJ energy is absorbed in the reaction.

What is Hess Law? Hess' law also known as Hess's law of constant heat summation states, “at constant temperature, heat energy changes (enthalpy – ΔHrec) accompanying a chemical reaction will remain constant, irrespective of the way the reactants react to form product”.

Thus, the ΔH of a reaction is calculated by subtracting the sum of the enthalpies of the reactants from the sum of the enthalpies of the products. If ΔH is positive, the reaction is endothermic and absorbs heat from the surroundings. If ΔH is negative, the reaction is exothermic and releases heat to the surroundings.

Hess's law states that if a process can be expressed as the sum of two or more steps, the enthalpy change for the overall process is the sum of the ΔH values for each step. To use Hess's law, two principles must be understood: one, if an equation is reversed, the sign of the ΔH value is also reversed.

For example, when 1 mole of hydrogen gas and 12 mole of oxygen gas change to 1 mole of liquid water at the same temperature and pressure, 286 kJ of heat are released. If gaseous water forms, only 242 kJ of heat are released.
