Spend time in sunlight. Vitamin D is often referred to as “the sunshine vitamin” because the sun is one of the best sources of this nutrient. ... Consume fatty fish and seafood. ... Eat more mushrooms. ... Include egg yolks in your diet. ... Eat fortified foods. ... Take a supplement. ... Try a UV lamp.

Most people need about 600 to 800 IU (units) of vitamin D per day through their diet (NIH, n.d.). Vitamin D 5000 IU is a high-dose supplement that can help treat vitamin D deficiency, which occurs when people don't get enough vitamin D through the sun or their diet.

Each 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily in addition to what the patient is currently ingesting will raise the level of 25(OH)D by 10 ng/mL after a few weeks.

Supplementation with 800 to 1000 IU/d of vitamin D or 50,000 IU monthly is safe for most people and can ensure levels of vitamin D within the optimal range. This intake is within the currently recommended safe upper tolerable limit for vitamin D of 2000 IU/d for those aged 1 year and older.

Although 4,000 IU (100 mcg) is set as the maximum amount of vitamin D you can take safely, several studies have shown that taking up to 10,000 IU (250 mcg) daily is not more likely to cause side effects than lower doses ( 48 , 49 ).

Our bodies produce active vitamin D after exposure to sunlight, and we get some vitamin D from food. Vitamin D is also a hormone. Hormones help control how cells and organs function. However, we do not call vitamin D “hormone D” because without it we cannot live.

In summary, long-term supplementation with vitamin D3 in doses ranging from 5000 to 50,000 IUs/day appears to be safe.

What are the symptoms of vitamin D toxicity? Decrease in appetite. Nausea and vomiting. Constipation. Dehydration. Increased thirst (polydipsia). Frequent urination. Confusion, lethargy and fatigue. Muscle weakness and difficulty walking.

Can vitamin D be harmful? Yes, getting too much vitamin D can be harmful. Very high levels of vitamin D in your blood (greater than 375 nmol/L or 150 ng/mL) can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, pain, loss of appetite, dehydration, excessive urination and thirst, and kidney stones.
